In a significant crackdown, Calgary police charged 16 men, primarily of Indian descent on visas, linked to a widespread extortion scheme targeting the South Asian community. While mugshots of 15 suspects have been publicly released, only one remains detained, with the others granted bail. Investigators are examining possible connections to the Bishnoi gang in light of 49 reported extortion cases, including several shootings, since April 2025.
