California cleared 900,000 lbs of debris, but left old telephone poles for purple martins to nest

California crews removed more than 900,000 pounds of human debris while restoring about 40 acres at Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. They also removed hazardous materials and old septic systems. Some telephone poles were left standing because purple martins use them for nesting. The birds were once thought to have disappeared from Santa Clara County.
