After Japan’s devastating 2011 tsunami, volunteers have planted more than 680,000 trees to protect the coast from future tsunamis

In a remarkable effort to enhance its coastal protection, Japan is planting over 680,000 native trees through the Chinju no Mori Project. This initiative, which complements existing concrete seawalls established after the 2011 tsunami, employs the innovative Miyawaki Method. By drawing inspiration from ancient guardian forests, these new dense forests will not only serve as a natural barrier against disasters but also provide numerous ecological advantages.
